FAQs - Adventure Israel +Poland Add-On
What is the "add-on" experience?
Participants now have the option to join 5 other URJ Camps to add-on a one-week Poland trip, as part of the URJ Camp Poland Cohort, on Yallah! Israel's longstanding L'Dor V'Dor program model. This challenging, yet rewarding journey will allow you to discover your personal connection to our people and our history, as well as examine how the experience of Jews in Eastern Europe informs our Judaism and the state of Israel today. You will form strong bonds with new friends from across North America, and carry the lessons your learned with you as you meet up with your camp cohort to continue onto your 4-week Israel adventure.
How are groups formed in Poland and Israel?
Participants from 5 URJ Camps (Camp Coleman, Goldman Union Camp Institute, Greene Family Camp, Jacobs Camp, and Olin-Sang Ruby Institute), will be placed on a URJ Camp Cohort bus(ses) while in Poland. Teens will then fly together from Poland to Israel. Once in Israel, teens will meet up with the rest of their peers from their respective URJ Camp. In March, we will provide a bus roster for each trip so participants can be see who they will be traveling in Poland, and then in Israel with.
How are flights arranged?
We have secured two different flight reservations:
- Participants who choose the +Poland option will fly from the US to Poland and Poland to Israel with their URJ Camp Poland Cohort. They will then fly back from Israel to the US with their specific URJ Camp.
- Participants who choose the Israel Only option will fly from the US to Israel and from Israel to the US with their specific URJ Camp.
Why is YALLAH! Israel offering an add-on option?
Historically, each individual URJ Camp has chosen whether their entire camp cohort would participate in our 4-week Israel Adventure program or our 5-week Poland & Israel L'Dor V'Dor program. For the first time ever, Yallah! Israel, in partnership with your URJ Camp, is offering families to choose while still keeping the spirit of "Camp in Israel". This will allow two things:
- Participants who previously did not have the choice to travel with their camp AND go to Poland can now do BOTH!
- Participants who previously did not want the Poland experience but wanted to travel in Israel with their camp can now do so
Incentive grants of up to $3250 are available!
Instructions on how to apply for scholarship and vouchers* will be provided after families register for a Yallah! Israel program.
*Dependent on RootOne's eligibilty requirements.
Participants will foster a strong connection to Israel and their Jewish identities. A Hebrew-based Israel (+Poland) experience will allow each participant to experience Israel not as a tourist, but as a Jewish young person returning home. This unique experience will impact participants when they return to their public schools, homes and communities, leaving them with an abiding relationship with Israel. There simply is no better place in the world to tell the Jewish story, and to do so in Hebrew.
Week One (OPTIONAL): l'dor v'dor - from generation to generation
Experience for yourself the epic journey of the Jewish people, exploring more than one thousand years of our rich European Jewish heritage. Visit medieval castles, wander through long-lost Jewish neighborhoods, and bring life to preserved pre-war synagogues. See the factory once owned by Oskar Schindler, made famous by the movie “Schindler’s List.” Deepen your understanding of the most challenging period in our collective history. Set the stage for your own Israel adventure.
Week Two: B’ruchim Habaim L’Yisrael! – Welcome
This summer we will listen, speak, and write as much Hebrew as is possible. You will start your journey with an opening ceremony at Tel Yafo overlooking ancient Jaffa, celebrating the miracle of arriving in the first “Hebrew City.” Spend three days trekking through the Negev desert just as our ancestors did, strengthening your community around the campfire. Swim in Eilat’s Coral Beach and snorkel in the cool water of the Red Sea. Explore the history, spirituality and magic of the ancient city of Jerusalem. Visit the Kotel, (the Western Wall), enjoy a water-hike through an ancient underground aqueduct, and shop in Jerusalem’s vibrant open-air market.
Week Three: ha'Boker Or - The Morning Light
The Judean desert is home to many of Israel’s most iconic experiences – camel rides, sleepouts in a Bedouin tent, and the ancient desert fortress of Masada overlooking the Dead Sea. Climb Masada and watch the sunrise during shacharit Tefillah. Follow it up with a float in the Dead Sea, cover yourself with the famous black mud, and cool off in the refreshing waterfalls of Ein Gedi. Travel north to the Galilee region, where much of our modern ideas about Judaism took root. Learn about Arabic words that have become a part of modern Israeli slang. Share deep connections with our Christian and Muslim cousins.
Spend the second half of the week participating in an Ulpan, Intensive Hebrew Program. Improve your Hebrew language skills while participating in an intensive experience maximizing our Hebrew immersion. You will be learning, going out on excursions and mifgashim (meeting) other Israeli teenagers.
Week Four: Shir ha'emek - Song of the Valley
Wander the mystical city of Tzfat, high up in the mountains of Israel. Explore the ancient alleyways and centuries-old synagogues, as you discover the origins of Kabbalah and Tikkun Olam. Get closer to Israel’s natural beauty in the Arbel Nature Reserve. Build relationships with your Israeli peers and practice your accent while ordering lunch at the local falafel shop. Sit atop the Golan Heights while examining the important beginnings of the dream of a Jewish state in Eretz Israel. Return to Jerusalem and begin to connect our ancient past to our recent past and our recent past to today.
Week Five: Lekach Tov - Taking Israel Back Home
Hit up trendy Tel Aviv, the first Hebrew speaking city since the destruction of the Temple. Shop at the Nachlat Binyamin artists’ market and swim at the beautiful beaches. Go on a tour of the Yazamut Center, Israel’s exciting high-tech showcase for technological innovations. Discover the soul of modern Israel and explore the famous graffiti displays in the Florentine neighborhood of Tel Aviv. Visit with an Arab family in Ein Rafa and learn about the historical connections of Islam to the city of Jerusalem and the land of Israel. Wrap up your trip in Jerusalem, a last chance to deepen your bond to your busmates, to your experiences, and to your Israel.
Choose Your Own Adventure
It’s your turn to choose your own personal experience. Before leaving for Israel, select one of these exciting 4-day in-depth experiences. This module offers you the opportunity to pursue your own interests while in Israel and make new friends from other Yallah! Israel buses at the same time.
Yam L’Yam (Sea to Sea)
Join this four day trek from the Kinneret (the Sea of Galilee) to the Mediterranean. Gain experience climbing, orienteering, hiking, mountain biking and camping.
Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World in Israel)
Explore critical social issues facing modern Israel and make your own personal contribution working together with Kibbutz Hanaton, a new type of Kibbutz model based on social justice in the Galilee.
Gadna (Army Training)
Participate in simulated Israeli Defense Forces basic training while living on an Israeli Army base. See for yourself what life is like in the IDF, a challenging touchstone experience shared by nearly all Israelis.
Sar-El (Volunteers for Israel)
Work side-by-side with Israeli soldiers, learn about their lives and backgrounds, and make a meaningful contribution to their base. You will get a deeper knowledge of the role the IDF plays in the defense of Israel and in the social fabric of the country. *This option is ONLY for teens travelling with Adventure National Session 1, L’Dor V’Dor National Session 1, Camp Coleman, Garin Greene, GUCI, Jacobs Camp, Camp Kalsman, Camp Newman, OSRUI, and WBT .
