A Journey of Heart and History

Written by Ben Plancey, Yallah! 2024 Participant

The past couple of days have been both serious and fun. Yesterday, we visited a hospital home called “Save a Child’s Heart,” where we learned about the help the organization provides to children from all over the world in need of heart surgery. After learning about the place, we went outside and played with the children, which not only brightened their day but ours as well.

After lunch, we participated in an archaeological dig, where we excavated a cave and found numerous pottery pieces to aid in research. Lastly, we ended our day in an Ethiopian Jews tent, learning about their lifestyle and immersing ourselves in their culture for the evening.

This morning, we rose early to visit Yad Vashem. We made our way through the unique museum, learning about the tragedies of the Holocaust. Despite the horrors, we concluded our visit with a sense of hope, reflecting on the resilience of our people and the light of Israel after the Holocaust.

After Yad Vashem, we went to Hebrew Union College (HUC), where we spoke with graduates and heardabout their experiences. We then made our way to the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) to interview the president about her role in the program. To conclude the night, we had dinner on Ben Yehudah Street and had a blast immersing ourselves in peak Israeli culture.
