In the Desert

By: Skylar Grace, Los Angeles

This week, bus 9B took on the Negev! Starting out nervous and uncertain, we did not have high expectations. But, the desert took us by surprise! Our tour guide, Rotem, helped show us the Negev’s beauty by creating a unique experience to understand and appreciate the breathtaking environment in Israel. Sleeping underneath the sky gave everyone a front row seat to the incredible stars, and the spectacular sunset every day. Waking up early gave us a chance to have full days of fun, where Rotem led us on many hikes, including the Red Canyon. We made our own breakfasts on the hike, and learned how to make tahini and and the “desert breakfast,” which has onions, tomatoes, olive oil, and zaatar. Rotem also led group activities where we got to know each other better, and educated us on the environment and wildlife around us. We also took a trip to Eilat, where we soaked up the sun at the beach and went snorkeling! Rotem taught us about the coral reef and fish population, where we learned that coral only grows a centimeter a year, so you can know it’s age based on its size! We ended our trip with Shabbat, where we had a chance to reflect on our experience and circled up singing hallelujah during sunset. We also had a campfire, where we sat around sharing s’mores, stories, and new Israeli snacks! This, along with all of the activities Rotem led, created a sense of community within our group, and allowed all of us to connect and bond with each other on another level. We left the desert not only knowing more about Israel, but each other. We are excited for what week 2 will bring!
