Interstellar Contemplation

By Asher Berkson-Gold, NFTY in Israel Madrich, Bus 6

After spending a day exploring in the desert, I decided to put my thoughts into words.

INTERSTELLAR CONTEMPLATION

As I like awake underneath the stars

Thinking of the complacency of human connection
And the contentness of human affection
I always seem to circle back to how I feel.

The rush of wind lightly tickles my skin
And playfully tussles my hair
As I realize why I was brought here.
I’m here to inspire
I’m here to be inspired

I like awake on sand and rocks
Clustered together and apart
Forming mounds few and far between

I see Jupiter
I see Mars
I like awake underneath the stars
Knowing that my best life is yet to be loved
Knowing that existence blows around like sand in the wind
Knowing that by the time I finish this poem, my experience will be that of just a memory

Floating through space
Intermingling with the constellations
I see before me
Slow Dancing with Saggitarius
And antiquating with Orion.

I am completely content
I am chilly but not cold, warm but not hot
Dirty but not Sandy, wandering but not lost

I swear I could do this for hours,
Get stuck in my own head, my own thoughts and what ifs.

As I hear my luggage tag lightly smack against my backpack.

But I know that tomorrow is a new day.
The sun will be rising soon
And I will be up to start this cycle all over again.

I close my eyes,
And drift off into my dreams.
A space of its own, an undefined time.
