Thoughts Before the Desert

By Noah Bookstein, NFTY in Israel Participant, Bus 5

I’m Noah Bookstein and I have been going to Eisner Camp for 6-7 years. For the next three days we will be hiking in the Negev desert. Hiking is one of my favorite things to do in the summer, and although it isn’t the Massachusetts forests which I have grown to love, I expect the Negev will be just as great!

Despite having been in the Negev desert a few times already, I am still very excited. Never before have I hiked the desert in this way, and doing it with my friends should be an extremely special experience. What I am most looking forward to are the sunset and the stars.

In the Negev, the stars at night time are supposed to be amazing. At Eisner camp, star gazing was always one of my favorite activities. I absolutely cannot wait to see the stars!

Exploring the Negev in Israel is kind of like exploring Europe, in a sense. The desert is so important to the Jewish people and treking through it is another way to explore our past and get a better view on our present and future. The beginning of our stories developed in the desert and I am looking forward to experiencing this with my friends!
