First Day Reflections From Bus 10

By Benjamin Wilkins, NFTY in Israel Participant, Bus 10

These first few days in Europe have been like nothing I have experienced before. Despite the large amount of time spent traveling by both bus and plane, we have been able to learn and experience some Jewish history in very meaningful ways. In Prague, we witnessed different kinds of synagogues as vibrant and decorative or concealed and personal. We learned about how Jews have been treated in the past centuries and how they were viewed more specifically in the nineteenth century. Though this may just be the start to our journey, the path we are following is bound to be filled with interesting facts and close, personal experiences.

On the first day at the airport when I looked around and saw no one I know the only thing I could think of was how on earth and I going to fit in. However, it was so much easier that I thought it was going to be and automatically people wanted to talk to me. It has only been a few days but, I feel like I have known the people on my bus for years. I feel as bought we are all so close. I never thought that I would have created friendship this fast. These last few day have shown me a sliver of what is to come in the next few weeks and I am so excited.

As Paul Theroux said, a trip is like setting off from home and going to a new place to discover new things. On this trip so far, I have seen new beautiful scenery and met new friends from places across the United States and across the globe. When I signed up for this trip I didn’t know what to expect but, I have been pleasantly surprised with the openness and willingness of people to let a stranger become a part of their life so fast. Not only as an acquaintance but a truly reliable friend. Learning about the history of Judaism at many historical sites allows people to connect in a strong way through their personal beliefs and religion. I feel so lucky to be living an experience as amazing as this with new opportunities, and the chance to form new bonds that will last forever.
